Kelley and Ly combine for treble at Canberra

Kelley Racing gave its owners an afternoon to remember at Thoroughbred Park on Saturday, 26 September, with stable apprentice Emma Ly riding three winners on the team’s annual owners’ day.

The stable finished with three wins and two seconds from eight runners, starting with a quinella in the opener and winning the final two races. The treble rounded out September with eight winners on the board for the season and marked a strong start to Ly’s time with the Canberra team.

Roonami set the afternoon going, leading home stablemate On Point Pixie to give Matthew Kelley the first two across the line. The daughter of Microphone out of Miss Chaparral was purchased by Matthew from Willow Park Stud at the 2024 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

The opening result was backed up later in the programme by Unmatched, who took out the 2000-metre event. A recent addition to the stable for owner John Onur, Unmatched brought up the double for Kelley and Ly and put the treble within reach heading into the last.

Flying Maurice completed the job with victory over 1200 metres. By Maurice out of Flandersrain, he was purchased by Peter and Rosemary Lewis from Blue Gum Farm at the 2025 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. His win gave the afternoon’s results a connection to both of Inglis’ major yearling sales in Sydney and Melbourne.

Ly’s three winners were accompanied by encouraging performances elsewhere on the card. Stupendo finished second in the TAB Federal, while Brutal Eyes was fourth in the same race. Both caught the eye, with Stupendo’s effort giving the stable its second runner-up finish alongside On Point Pixie.

The Canberra treble followed two maiden breakthroughs earlier in the month. Step Quick won over 1180 metres at Gundagai on 6 September, before Boujee Gold scored over 1460 metres at Queanbeyan two days later. Coriah Keatings was aboard both horses.

Those two winners now head to Goulburn on Tuesday, 6 October, looking to make it back-to-back successes. Boujee Gold moves to 1600 metres in the Benchmark 58, while Step Quick contests the Country Boosted Benchmark 58 over 1100 metres.

The stable also has a new arrival nominated for Sydney on Wednesday. Our Huntress holds an entry in the fillies and mares Benchmark 72 over 1250 metres on Randwick’s Kensington track, with a first appearance for Kelley Racing on the agenda.

Thank you to everyone who attended owners’ day and to our owners for their continued support. Congratulations to the winning connections, Emma and the team whose work went into preparing Saturday’s runners.
